Paper Towels or Cloth Rag
BAB Steering recommends lint free cotton towels because paper towel fibers (a small piece of the towel) have been know to interfere with the filtration system and cause closely toleranced parts to fail. Some paper towels may also contain abrasive materials which can score the internal parts of the hydraulic components.
Caustic and abrasive materials can score the vanes, pistons, bearings etc. inside the power steering components. The fibers can be transferred to the system fluid when checking the fluid level of the steering system or when cleaning out the reservoir and component parts.
A cotton shop rag or towel should be used when checking fluid levels or cleaning hydraulic parts and systems. Note: Nylon, rayon and polyester rags are not recommended as they too are caustic and can damage the system if a piece of the cloth transfers or get into the steering system fluid.
It is equivalent to eyeglass manufacturers recommending a cotton towel to clean your eyeglasses |
